Smells

Sometimes I wander and a smell hits me that reminds me of another time and another place.

It is summer at the moment and the ground is dry as a bone. Walking through a field of dry grass and evergreen trees I am hit with the smell of Greece... well I think it is Greece.

I remember being very young in a village square abroad. The square is sheltered by pines... well I think they are pines, and there is an old iron play park painted emerald green. I think we are waiting for my mum who is in a shop. The ground is soft with old leaves (or needles) it is a perfect temperature and the smell. Its funny how a memory can be so fuzzy but of all the senses the smell is what remains, dry and sweet.

Walking through a field of dry grass and evergreen trees it also occurs to me that the whole world is linked by nature, endless landscapes that have similarities to one another. Green grass, shady trees. You can be somewhere completely foreign and step outside and find something familiar. Parts of South Africa look like the rolling green fields of Virginia, and a soccer field in Virginia can look the same as a football field in England.

You can find home and memories anywhere in this wide world... if you look close enough, or take good ol' sniff that is. Nature, and our natures link us all.
